DIY Veggietales Inspired Cake ( Bob the tomato) with Fondant. - A Bountiful Love

DIY Veggietales Inspired Cake ( Bob the tomato) with Fondant.

Both of our girls loves to watch Veggietales. Most specially  Big Sister, she turned 4 yrs old last November. When they say kids grow up so fast , they're not kidding! Hubby and I wanted to do something special for her. When she woke up we filled our front room with red balloons. Though we didn't had a party but we still made a loving effort to celebrate her day. She is our eldest, she made us a family, so all the best for our girl.

It took a lot of thinking on whether should I brave on making her a Bob the tomato cake ( it's her favorite character) or should i just order her one or just a plain round cake would do. I know how much she loves.. I MEAN REALLY LOVES veggietales so I decided, what the hay..I can do it! I am not a professional baker , the cake is not perfect. It has some cracks and creases but it is special , her momma made it for her and her reaction upon seeing the cake is PRICELESS.

Ingredients:

1 box of chocolate cake mix and the ingredients  needed to make it.
8 ounces miniature marshmallows (4 cups not packed, or half of a 16-ounce bag)
1 pound powdered sugar (4 cups), plus extra for dusting
2 tbsp water
red and green food coloring
Wilton Black decorating Icing

Directions:

Bake your cake. I made two round cakes. Let it cool , set aside.
Place the marshmallows and the 2 tbsp of  water in a  microwave-safe bowl. Microwave  for 1 minute, until the marshmallows are puffy and expanded.

Stir the marshmallows using a  rubber spatula until they are melted and smooth. If you see unmelted marshmallow pieces , return the bowl in the microwave for about 30 secs just until the marshmallows are  smooth.  There should be no lumps.

Add the powdered sugar to the melted marshmallow. Stir until well incorporated and it becomes impossible to stir anymore. Dust a wooden chop board or counter top with powdered sugar. Place your marshmallow mixture onto your prepared work surface. It will be sticky! and that's okay.. Dust your hands with powdered sugar and knead the fondant mixture like it's nobody's business. Knead like what you would do to a bread dough. Knead until it is smooth and not sticky anymore.

You may add more powdered sugar until it is not sticky anymore. Don't add too much, it will make your fondant stiff. At this point , I separated 5 balls from the mixture . It will be the two eyeballs , the nose , the mouth and his hair.  I added red food coloring on one of the small fondant mixture ( for the nose) and green on one of the fondant mixture ( for the hair). Shape the green fondant into small triangles. And the rest will just be white.

Flatten the remaining fondant mixture into  around disc ( it will be Bob's face) , add the red food coloring at the center of the disc  and fold the sides over on itself . You will see streaks, just continue working on the mixture until it is uniform in color.

You can now roll it out , (not so thin..I did this twice and could not transfer it to my cake ) and transfer the rolled fondant onto your cake.

Smooth it and dust off excess powdered sugar on top.  Trim the fondant as well.

Attach the eyes , nose , mouth and hair.

Using the Wilton black decorating Icing , carefully pipe the black part of bob's eyes.

Far from perfect but we loved the cake. Lucy's smile is precious!

sorry Bob , we have to eat you!
