Fifteen years ago, I remember saying "it is hard to raise children nowadays, there's too many thigs to worry about." Fast forward in today's world, raising children felt more challenging with smartphones, social media, online gaming, artificial intelligence, messaging apps, and unlimited internet. I do get the advantages of these technological advancements, but they have also introduced significant dangers.
I attended a women's conference that is geared towards apologetics and how do we protect ourselves and our family from the schemes of the enemies. There's progressive Christianity, New Age, and the twisting of Biblical truths. As Christian parents, we are called to do more than provide food, clothing, and shelter. God has entrusted us with the responsibility of protecting our children's hearts, minds, and souls. Of course, we cannot shield our children from every temptation, but we can prepare them with wisdom, establish healthy boundaries, and point them continually to Christ. Why is internet safety matters more than ever? As I have mentioned above, the internet is a powerful tool and a great resource. I mean I do not want to live under a rock. I recognize that the internet can help our children learn, communicate, create, and connect with others. Children are naturally curious. They often don't recognize danger until it's too late. There are these things that our children can be exposed to if we are not proactive:
- Pornography
- Online predators
- Cyberbullying
- Identity theft
- Scams
- Violent or disturbing content
- Addictive social media algorithms
- Peer pressure
- False teaching
- Harmful ideologies
Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV)
Training includes preparing our children to make wise decisions online.
Technology changes quickly, but biblical truth never changes. There will always be a new version of mobile phones, new features, and new updates. But if we train them and teach them to think with a Christian worldview, we are empowering them to make wise decisions.
"Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life."
Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV)
Our children's hearts are constantly being shaped by what they watch, hear, and consume.
Every video...
Every conversation...
Every social media feed...
Every influencer...
These things slowly shape beliefs, values, attitudes, and identity.
Protecting their digital world is one way we help guard their hearts. Who do you want to teach your children? It should be God's voice and the Holy Spirits guidance they should be hearing not the world's noise.
"See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil."
Ephesians 5:15-16 (NKJV)
Scripture reminds us to live wisely.
Helping our children learn discernment online is part of teaching them to walk wisely in today's culture. How we value our time and how we spent our time can bring glory to God too.
- Internet access
- Social media
- Messaging apps
- Cameras
- Gaming
- Streaming
- Artificial intelligence
- Online shopping
- News
- Entertainment
- Millions of strangers
There are practical ways to teach boundaries when it comes to internet and cell phone safety. These are some examples:
- No phones during meals.
- No devices in bedrooms overnight.
- Family charging station in a common area.
- Screen-free Sundays or evenings.
- You need to know your kid's passwords
- No deleting messages without permission.
- Ask before downloading new apps.
- Use Parental Controls Technology should support—not replace—parental involvement.
- Content filters
- Screen time limits
- App approval settings
- Website restrictions
- Safe search
- Location sharing for older children
- Model the good behavior
These tools create another layer of protection and boundaries. Communication and grace will be key. I love asking my girls questions like:
Does this honor God?
Would I be comfortable if Jesus sat beside me while I watched this?
Does this content encourage truth?
Is this helping me love God and others? It will also be helpful if parents will have a set of rules or boundaries for cell phone usage too? After all, our kids will remember more our actions than our words. We need to be a good example.
Pray for wisdom and protection over your kids against temptation. Ask Jesus to open our eyes to see the areas where your children need guidance.
Putting your phone away during family conversations.
Reading your Bible before checking social media.
Taking regular digital sabbaths.
Being fully present during meals.
Lastly, we need to use the scriptures as we guide our kids. God's word is profitable for teaching (2Timothy 3:16) and His Word is a lamp to our feet (Psalm 119:105). We are to teach Christian worldview and God's truth diligently. (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)
