Oregano oil is packed with carvacrol and thymol, two powerful compounds that give it impressive medicinal properties. Carvacrol, the main active compound in oregano, is an antioxidant (phenol). Thymol may help protect against toxins and fungal infections. Moreover, it boosts immunity as it aids in fighting off colds, flu, and infections. Oregano oil also supports digestive health by supporting gut health and reducing bloating.

This research found that carvacrol is effective in eliminating the bacteria Staphiloccocus

Another study found that herbal remedies with high levels of both carvacrol and thymol were effective tools in treating SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth). For skin issues like acne, athlete’s foot, and nail fungus, oregano oil can fight bacteria and fungus. A 2015 study presented the role of thymol in fungal infections. Its anti-inflammatory properties offer relief to sore muscles and joint pain.

 Ingredients:

 • ½ cup fresh oregano leaves (or ¼ cup dried oregano)

 • 1 cup of Organic olive oil

 • 1 small glass jar with a lid

 Instructions:

If using fresh oregano, wash and dry the leaves thoroughly. Crush them gently to release their natural oils. I used dried oregano (no washing needed).

Place the oregano in a clean glass jar and pour the carrier oil over it, ensuring the leaves are fully submerged.

This is optional; for a quick method,  infusing with heat will work. Place the jar in a warm (not boiling) water bath for 10-15 minutes. This helps release the essential compounds. You can also use your crockpot with a towel at the bottom of the crock. Place the jar on top of the towel so it is not directly on top of the crock. Make sure that your jar is submerged in water, covering/drenching the contents of the jar with water. This ensures that the oil inside the jar is warmed properly. Do not cover the crockpot with a lid and set it on warm for 8 hours.

For the other method (this is the method I used),  infuse for 2-4 weeks:

Store the jar in a warm, sunny spot and shake it daily to mix the oils.

After 2-4 weeks, strain the oil using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Transfer to a dark glass bottle to preserve potency.

How to Use Oregano Oil:

Oregano oil can be taken topically (diluted with carrier oil) or orally (2-3 drops diluted with water/juice). If you choose to buy, follow the manufacturer's recommended dosage. Remember that this is different from essential oil. While both are potent, essential oils can burn soft tissues in your mouth.

I do not suggest using the oil for infants, young children, pregnant women, or diabetic patients. As always, consult with your physician. It is very important to be careful with any allergic reactions. And with any medications or any health journey you are in, too much of it can be harmful.

  •  Immune Boosting – Take a few (2-3) drops diluted in water or juice when feeling under the weather.
  •  Skin & Wound Care – Apply diluted oregano oil to minor cuts, acne, or fungal infections.
  •  Sore Muscles & Joint Relief – Massage onto affected areas for natural pain relief.
  •  Aromatherapy & Inhalation – Add to a diffuser to help clear congestion.

Store oregano oil in a dark glass bottle away from direct sunlight. You may want to use amber glass with a dropper. If stored properly, it can last for up to 6 months. Homemade oregano oil is a versatile, natural remedy that’s easy to make and incredibly useful. Whether you use it for wellness, skincare, or even cooking, having this powerful herbal oil on hand is a great addition to your natural health toolkit.
