As a homeschool mom, building a routine is important for a child and in their teenage years. Reading His word is a non-negotiable part of our day. I do recognize the fact that families get busy. I am one of them! We forget things and sometimes we just try to find our happy medium. However, we need to get into His word in many ways. If a sit-down read your bible doesn't fit your time frame, there's always an audio bible, a podcast (biblical), a worship song, or a short devotional. It makes a difference when we set the day and the tone with the Holy Spirit. Along with praying (which can also be an all-day thing), we must let the Holy Spirit guide our day.
This is also especially true for our teens as they face a lot of challenges. There are a lot of things that this world will tell them what is right. We do not want our teens to accept lies and twisted truths, Instead, we need to equip them as they find their place in this world. As you shop around devotionals, you will soon find out that there are a lot of options out there. When I buy devotionals for my own teens or to give to someone. My first rule is that it needs to look engaging or fun to read. Just like food, teens tend to shop with their eyes first. They love cute and beautiful things. Second, it needs to be simple. Some teens truly enjoy reading but some get impatient with the context of a book. Third, the topics or issues or help we look for need to be relevant. I do not think that a topic such as budgeting will necessarily be important for them.
That is why I like the Embracing Imperfect and Sunny Days Ahead because it did check all of those criteria for me. Topics are very relevant for whatever a teen may face, Even at my age, I am 43, and reading through the devotional still speaks to my heart. Some of the devotional topics are about insecurities, body image, failure, unhealthy coping, unmet goals, and choosing the right people in your life. These are just a few and aren't they all crucial issues that teens face? Even adult life has those issues. Absolutely yes! I am also loving the reflection and journal area!
