Fun Day Trips - A Bountiful Love

Fun Day Trips

We love to explore new adventures. One of our bucket lists is to visit as many National Parks as we can. So far we have checked off the Grand Canyon, Death Valley National Park, and Joshua Tree National Park. I do find solace and peace in Gods' creation. When we are not taking a weekend trip or on a short vacation, we enjoy day trips as well. Exploring doesn't have to be that expensive or too far, especially with the rising gas prices.

Depending on traffic, the day trips that I will be sharing are less than 2 hrs trips. These are fun and family-friendly day trips from Redlands, CA. Even if you live outside Redlands and live in major cities like Los Angeles, these trips are still doable. Just like any other trips that you will take, be sure to check weather and traffic conditions as well as COVID restrictions or policy.

1. Calico Ghost Town

In 1881, the town of Calico was bustling with prospectors searching for its mineral riches like silver. Calico mining became one of the richest mining districts in California. Silver and Borax were produced in Calico, boosting its popularity. In 1887, its population grew and 22 saloons sprang up including its own red-light district and a schoolhouse. When the price of the silver dropped, Calico became a ghost of its former self. The calico ghost town was bought by Mr. Walter Knott (founder of Knotts Berry Farm) and donated it to the county in 1966.

There are so many things to do at Calico Ghost Town aside from its educational and historical value. We hiked some of its mining hills. Just remember to wear proper shoes and keep in mind that some of the rocky hills might be unsafe. Not all areas are ADA accessible because the town maintains its historical nature. Some mines are extremely hazardous so make sure to follow signs as well.

We love the small shops and activities like the gold panning and Mystery Shack. They also have a train ride and a Maggie mine Tour.  The remaining original buildings are Calico Park Office, Lane's General Store, Lil's Saloon, Lucy Lane's House, and Zenda Mining Co. The Calico Ghost Town also offers a camping area!

Address: 36600 Ghost Town Road. Yermo, CA 92398

Admission: $8 Adults, $5 Youth, and Free for 3 yr. old and under.

2. Joshua Tree National Park

We absolutely love Joshua Tree National Park. We have been here several times and have enjoyed every visit. Joshua Tree is just an hour and 30 minutes away from Redlands, CA.  It is truly an oasis that is just a few hours away from major cities like Los Angeles, San Diego, and Las Vegas,  The park has so much to offer. I may have to do a separate blog post on fun things to do but nevertheless, the activities that you can do at the park will involve a minimum of a 2-day visit.

The entrance fee is $30, $25 for motorcycles, and $15 for individual entrances...all of these are a 7-day permit. We have the Americal the Beautiful Annual Pass (All national parks and BLM lands). The pass is $80 but it is free for the military (including Veterans) and a discount is available for seniors. Furthermore, there are a few free annual passes available. Learn more HERE via nps.org

3. Jenks Lake

Jenks Lake is about 30 minutes away from Redlands, CA. It is definitely a short trip if you want a break from all the hustle and bustle of life. Hike to Jenks lake is a moderate hike and I would recommend great hiking shoes because the trail can be rocky. Jenks lake is only a day-use facility where you can picnic and do some fishing. This is a day trip for us, however, there are several cabins in the area and campgrounds (Barton Flats, San Gorgonio, South Fork) if you want to explore nature and dig into the outdoors for several days.

4. Big Bear City

Big Bear City is roughly one hour away from Redlands and only a few hours away as well from Los Angeles. Depending on the season, Big Bear has a lot to offer too! From snow-related activities and sports to just a laid-back stroll at Big Bear Village. Big Bear is a great place if you needed an escape that is not too far, they offer a lot of choices (Cabins, motels, and Bead and Breakfast type lodging) for an overnight to a several-night stay. Some of the activities that you can do are fishing, hiking, picnicking, camping. lake activities (kayak, canoes).

We have tried the Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain and the go-kart, both were absolutely fun and memorable.  For a complete list of things to do, visit Things To Do in Big Bear

Address (Visitor Center): 40824 Big Bear Blvd. Big Bear Lake, CA 92315

5. Idyllwild

Idyllwild is located in the San Jacinto Mountains. The small town of Idyllwild has a unique character and is a great place to hang out whether you are into nature or love the small town chic vibe. Shops are locally owned and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. Activities such as hiking (from beginner to advanced hike), camping, rock climbing, and biking are some of the fun experiences that your family will enjoy. I especially love the thrift shop and the small shops. You can grab a cup of coffee or even ice cream and stroll along the boutiques.
