Book Review: Angels all Around us - A Bountiful Love

Book Review: Angels all Around us

 Growing up Catholic, I was always fascinated with angels. At elementary school (Kindergarten to first grade if my recollection is correct). we pray to our guardian angels for protection before we head home. I see angel statues all over the cemetery that signifies a tom of a child that is never easy to see. But somehow, the angel statue makes it easier to comprehend. I was always told that babies that died become angels. Maybe that is the explanation I am given because it is an easy one to give. I was only taught that angels are made by God to protect us and guard us.

 I still read about the angels and believe in them. And obviously, have a different perspective or understanding of angels. I was thrilled to receive a copy of a children's book, Angels All Around Us, written by Larry S. Glover. I was excited to read it with my girls, ages 11 and 9 years old.

The book starts with an angel bible reference from Psalm 91:11-12.

"God has set his angels to watch over us. They will be with us wherever we go. They will catch us with their hands and we won't get hurt if we hit our foot on a stone".

All throughout the Holy Bible, you will read references to angels. Here are a few of them:

“And now your servant says, ‘May the word of my lord the king secure my inheritance, for my lord the king is like an angel of God in discerning good and evil. May the LORD your God be with you.’ ”
-2 Samuel 14:17

"In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents".
-Luke 15:10

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
-Hebrews 14:14

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;
-Psalm 91:11

Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
-John 20:11-12

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment;
-2 Peter 2:4

 I think this book, Angels All Around Us is a perfect tool for parents as a gateway into teaching young kids about the angels. Every page has beautiful illustrations of everyday scenarios and life. The pages of the book also provide angel illustrations. Remember that kids have vivid imaginations and it is indeed helpful to depict angels in their human-like form. However, I also think that it will be a great point of learning to discuss what do we know about angels, why God made them, what do they look like, and their role-but all in scripture context.

The bible passages remind us that angels are made by God. They share His messages, do God's will, help us fight our spiritual battles, and minister to our souls. God sends them to guide us and watch over us. They also serve as His messenger. Movies have depicted them as humans but they are not human beings. In the bible, they can take many forms and can take a form of a man.  That is why the Bible also reminds us to: "...to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing so some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it". Hebrews 13:2

The book discusses these questions: What is an angel? Have you ever wondered how angels can help you?  How do we feel their presence?  Various types of angels are also in the book and how they help us like Archangel Michael and Archangel Gabriel.

My 9 -year old enjoyed this book. I think that it is a fun book to read as a family and as I have mentioned, a perfect gateway into introducing angels to little children. Furthermore, these pointers will be helpful as you read the book together:

1. Read the Bible as well and read several passages about the angels starting from the book of Genesis.
2. Watch Christian-based movies about angels. It is always fun if we add entertainment to learning.
3. Pray for guidance. It is easy to confuse the Holy Spirit with angels. The Holy Spirit lives in us, always ready to guide us and also fight our spiritual battles on our behalf.
4. Let them ask questions. This way you will get a snapshot of their understanding and faith. Little children's faith is so inspiring!

I also love that the book is interactive in its simple way! There is a space where you document how an angel had helped your child and a coloring page too.

Ange's All Around Us is from ChildLike Faith. They have a great selection of books for kids designed to grow their faith and character. See their collections on their website.
