Easy Homemade Ghee - A Bountiful Love

Easy Homemade Ghee

If you are not familiar with ghee, you are on the right blog post. Ghee is widely used in the Middle East and India for culinary purposes. It is from cow's milk butter and a kind of clarified butter. Ghee holds more nutrients and is sometimes used as part of Ayurvedic medicine. Aside from its nutrients, it also contains vitamins, anti-inflammatory properties, and healthy fats. If you are lactose intolerant like me, ghee is safe for you. In the process of making ghee, milk solids are removed and this process makes the ghee perfect for lactose intolerant peeps. Some of the vitamins it carries are vitamin A, D, E, B12, and K2 (Healthyline.com).

Ghee can be expensive especially if your diet requires you to use it on recipes. The good news is that it is cheaper to make it at home. You will only need 1 ingredient which is good quality butter, a saucepan, a jar for storing it, and a cheesecloth. You can use ghee with a wide range of recipes that calls for regular butter or cooking oil. I have used it in baking, sauteeing veggies, smothered it on top of sourdough pancakes and bread, and pasta. If you ask me, this is a really smart swap for your regular vegetable or canola oil.

Ingredients and Materials:

8 oz good quality butter. Preferably unsalted, grass-fed, organic butter.

Cheesecloth

Glass jar

Directions:

Melt the butter over medium-low. Just let it do its own thing. You do not have to stir it.
As it melts and bubbles, you will see whey floating to the surface. Skim it off.

You can discard the whey and save it for family members who are not sensitive to dairy.

Continue to cook. It will turn into a clear golden liquid and the milk solids will sink at the bottom. Turn your stove off and let it cool. Strain it using a cheesecloth and store it in glass jars.

I stored my ghee inside the fridge and it will look like this when solid:

Ghee has a high smoke point that makes it more versatile and perfect for cooking and baking. Butter may be your best bet if you expect a creamier outcome or texture but you can use ghee with almost everything such as sauteeing, frying, and roasting.

Here's an easy dessert recipe using your homemade ghee:

GHEE FUDGE

Ingredients:
1/4 cup melted ghee
2 cups chocolate chips
1/4 cup of sweetened condensed milk
1 cup of butterscotch chips

Directions:

2. Add both of the chips into the milk and ghee mixture. Stir until the chips are melted.
3. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish, let it cool and place it inside the fridge to speed up the hardening process.
