Can you really find contentment in a a world of comparison. In the world of social media and not just on our real lives , it is indeed very easy to fall into this culture of comparison.
Comparing ourselves to our friends, our family and even strangers! I must admit that I have fallen into this trap before and I may fall into it again.
It started in a Facebook comment. I don't recall the exact picture where the comment was made. But all I remember was being told that I need to go out more often ( Because I am a SAHM), that I have to tell my husband that I need a break. This comment was made by a working mom. I really have a beef with the comparison between a stay at home mom and the working mom. Needless to say, it got me thinking? Am I really missing something with not going out? I felt little .. and ended up comparing herself to me. While I'm at home taking care of my little ones wearing my worn out sweats , she shared a lot of pictures of herself fully made up, nice clothes, branded things. Then I prayed and with my husbands wisdom. He reminded me of how valuable my work here at home with our kids is. It doesn't matter what other people may think of me being a stay at home mom, what matters is the time I am putting in with our girls. The girls that God has entrusted me with.
Then I have that friend too, she used to constantly compare herself to me and others. She sees a supermom in me. I'm not. . She sees me all prettied up but she doesn't see the mountains of laundry that I have. She notices our girls good attributes but doesn't see the hard work that I invest in them, the teamwork my husband and I put in.
If we are not careful and mindful , we will end up being envious of others. We will steal somebody elses joy just because we can't find our own. We can't find the contentment in not being perfect.
"I'm Happy for You (Sort Of...Not Really): Finding Contentment in a Culture of Comparison" by Kay Wills Wyma is a book about the struggle of comparison. I really adore her sense of humor! Especially on that part where she was filling out an online form for a position. Been there, done that.
If you struggle with comparisons, you will love this book! You are not the only one with food wrappers in the car or laundry in the washer that's been washed 3 times!
