DIY Ariel and Ursula Costume - A Bountiful Love

DIY Ariel and Ursula Costume

How easy is this DIY ARIEL AND URSULA COSTUME? Very easy and budget-friendly. Just so I won't bore you with a long post, this DIY Ariel and Ursula Costume tutorial will be a two-part series.

Ever since our dear Lucy saw Little Mermaid, she's hooked! She loves everything, Ariel. She requested to be Ariel last year for Halloween. If you know me, you know that I will try to match or at least incorporate our two girls together. Last time, they were THING 1 and THING 2.

and it came in really handy this year for Dr. Seuss's birthday. She wore it to school, and of course our youngest just has to wear hers too.

I did my research on Pinterest ( that counts..right?) and almost all of the Ursula costume tutorials I found were for adults or a couple of DI Y's that involves a sewing machine. I do have a sewing machine but my skills are limited.  These costumes involve minimal and basic hand sewing skills.

Here are the materials you'll need: ( for both Ursula and Ariel)

  • Tulle Spools ( 25-Yard) Purple--> I used 4 spools. For the Ursula, I used the black and dark purple/plum color; for Ariel, I used the lime green and Aqua  (note: the amount of tulle you will use depends on the size and how long you want it to be)
  • laces - I bought mine at Joane's
  • needle
  • thread - black
  • glue gun

Let's start with Ursula.

I chose to purchase the pre-cut tulle spools, it will save you time. You can buy it by the yards too and there are some great tutorials on how to quickly cut the tulle because I'll be honest, it's a pain to cut it individually.

Measure your desired tutu length.  If the length of the skirt you choose is let's say 24 inches long, double that. So you will be cutting 48 inches instead because you will be folding it in half.

Here's a step by step procedure ( pictures below):

1. I used a canister of Nesquik to hold my crochet headband. It's not fancy but it got the job done.

2.  Fold a piece of the tulle in half, if you want the tutu to be more fluffy then add more tulle. I used one only on each square because they will still be wearing leggings inside.

3. Make sure you start at the second row of the square hole.

4.  Hold at the center to make a knot.

5. Insert it in the second row, make a knot.

6. Pull gently.

7. Make sure that the knots are all facing the same direction. Facing you.

8. Repeat with the second color ( I wanted the tutu to be alternating colors of black and plum). Repeat the process all the way.

After the outfit was done, I had our youngest daughter to try it on. To make sure it looked good. She told me that the crochet headband was scratching her skin. So I grabbed an old tank top of mine I cut it in half using a rotary cutter. I pressed it so I can easily sew it on the crochet band. I made a lining that looked like a tube top.  I sewed that lining onto the crochet band.

This is totally optional. I hot glued the lace around the waist line, covering the knots.

What's an Ursula costume without the shell necklace?

I've turned to my " search engine " --- Pinterest.  I've seen a very cute tutorial using polymer clay, but again I wanted to use most of the materials I already have.

1.  I used felt fabric ( yellow, that looks like golden yellow),  trace a "horn-like" figure.

2. Cut the figures and I hot glued the vertical side and the other edge, one side only.

3. It would look like the photo shown below, with a slim pocket.

4. I filled it with pillow stuffing in sections and I hot glued it to seal it.

5. Roll it, so it would resemble a shell. As you roll, hot glue it.

6. Get your remaining lace, it would serve as the "chain".

7. I've attached a small felt circle at the back of the felt shell. This is where I will glue the "lace chain"

9. You can either use velcro or a snappy to serve as the "clasp" -- I took an old footie pj's, I mean old with ginormous holes and recycled the snappies

voila!

I applied makeup on her and tried to replicate Ursula's eyebrows.

That..you can skip.

We bought the wig from Kmart.  It's a witch wig, Adult size so we had to use some hairpins to keep it from falling.

There she is rocking her Ursula costume!
