CSB Teen Study Bible Review - A Bountiful Love

CSB Teen Study Bible Review

The teenage years are a time of tremendous growth. Teens are developing their identity, narratives, ideology, forming their values, making more independent decisions, and beginning to think seriously about what they believe. As a Christian mom, one of the greatest gifts we can give our teenagers is a strong foundation in God's Word. But why is it so important for teens to study the Bible for themselves aside from taking teenagers to church is wonderful.

Listening to sermons and participating in youth groups are valuable too. But our teens also need to learn how to open the Bible, understand what it says, ask questions, and apply God's truth to their own lives. The goal isn't simply to raise teenagers who know Bible stories. We want to help them develop a lifelong relationship with God and learn to recognize His truth and apply this truth to their daily lives.

 1. The Bible Helps Teens Know Who God Is

Teenagers are surrounded by messages telling them what they should believe about life, identity, success, relationships, and happiness. Social media, books, even schools, or advertisements are sources of information. This information overload may not always support your family values and faith. The Bible gives them an opportunity to discover who God actually reveals Himself to be. Instead of learning about God only through what other people say, teens can read His Word for themselves. Studying the Bible will reveal God's character- His holiness, provisions, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience, sovereignty, mercy, love, and faithfulness. A study on His character is a beautiful revelation on its own.

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 NKJV

 2. Bible Study Helps Teens Develop Their Own Faith

These teenage years whether we like it or not is a transition where they will develop their own opinion and belief system. Of course they will never be always correct on their thinking. Our goal isn't to give teenagers every answer or leave them to their own devices. Our goal is to teach them where to go to find biblical answers. At the end of the day, you need to ask yourself which "voice" should be louder in your teen's hearts and mind? Will it be what society dictates or what God says with your guidance.

 3. Scripture Gives Teens a Foundation for Making Decisions

A few of the decisions your teens may face include choices about: friendships, dating and relationships social media, entertainment, school, money, alcohol and drugs, sexual boundaries, honesty, work integrity, college and future careers. The Bible may not have a specific answer on certain issues, but God's word can offer guidance and clear wisdom. Bible study can help them apply biblical principles.

Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. Psalm 119:105, NKJV

 4. The Bible Helps Teens Recognize Truth

As I have mentioned earlier, today's generation have access to an enormous amount of information. Artificial intelligence can all shape the way young people think. Not everything they encounter is true. This makes biblical discernment especially important.  Teaching teenagers to study Scripture helps them ask: Is this actually true? Does this agree with God's Word? And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. What does Scripture say about this? Am I allowing culture to shape my thinking more than God's Word? These are valuable questions for teenagers to learn to ask.

 5. Bible Study Helps Teens Handle Peer Pressure

Peer pressure doesn't always look like a group of teenagers encouraging someone to do something obviously wrong. Sometimes teen's inner voice and inner conversation will look like: "Everyone else is doing it." "It's not really a big deal." "You're being too serious." "Nobody believes that anymore." "If you don't do this, you're going to be left out."  They need convictions that come from understanding what they believe and why. Studying Scripture can help them develop convictions that remain with them even when Mom and Dad aren't around.

 6. Scripture Gives Teens Wisdom for Relationships

Friendships become incredibly important during adolescence. Teenagers are learning how to handle conflict, loyalty, forgiveness, boundaries, communication, and trust. The Bible has much to say about how we treat other people. Just read through the book of Proverbs alone, It is a treasure load of wisdom on relationships. Some teen issues that they will face and can use biblical teaching are on loving others without selfish intent, forgiving others, controlling anger, avoiding gossip and corrupt friends, showing kindness, speaking life, practicing humility, setting appropriate boundaries. These lessons aren't merely "church lessons." They are life lessons.

 7. The Bible Can Help Teens Through Difficult Seasons

Teenagers aren't immune to disappointment, grief, rejection, uncertainty, or fear. Sometimes a situation is not necessarily a rejection, but their mind and heart will perceive it as a hurtful rejection.  The book of Psalm is a lovely and precious book to read when our hearts are discouraged and forlorn The book of Job offers different perspective on life's hardships. They can look at Joseph's life when circumstances don't make sense and when they feel like people are unfair. They can study Peter's failures and restoration. They can read about Paul's perseverance through suffering. The Bible reminds teenagers that God is still God even when life doesn't go according to plan. He is sovereign even in the midst of our difficult seasons.

 8. Bible Study Teaches Teens How to Pray

Bible reading and prayer naturally work together. I love using the scriptures for prayers. When teenagers study Scripture, they discover God's promises, commands, character, and priorities. Those things can shape their prayers.

 9. Bible Study Helps Teens Prepare for Adulthood

One day, our teenagers will leave our homes. We won't always be there to answer their questions. That's why one of the most important things we can teach our children is how to seek God's wisdom for themselves. Teaching a teenager how to study the Bible is similar to teaching them a skill they can use for the rest of their lives.

 10. Bible Study Helps Teens Build a Lifelong Habit

Our goal shouldn't be to make Bible study another assignment that teenagers have to complete. We want them to eventually see God's Word as something they genuinely need. Just as we need food to nourish our physical bodies, scripture feeds our soul. We also need to model. They need to see us study God's word and live on His wisdom. They need to see us pray like our life depends on it. Afterall, it is our actions that will shape them more than the words we speak. A teenager who develops the habit of opening God's Word today has a foundation that can continue into adulthood.

"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." — Matthew 4:4, NKJV
