Crockpot Split Pea Soup - A Bountiful Love

Crockpot Split Pea Soup

There’s nothing quite as comforting as a warm bowl of split pea soup and making it in the crockpot makes it even easier! This slow-cooked and classic recipe is packed with flavor, hearty enough for a full meal, and perfect for chilly days. We have been in the middle of colder weather up here in the mountains so this comfort bowl of soup that had been cooking all day is such a blessing.  Plus, it’s a great way to use up leftover ham. That is why I love buying a whole bone in ham because it makes several meals!

 Why You’ll Love This Recipe:
• Easy to Make – Just dump the ingredients in the crockpot and let it do the work!
 • Budget-Friendly – Made with affordable pantry staples.
 • Healthy & Nutritious – Packed with fiber, protein, and vitamins.
 • Great for Meal Prep – Tastes even better the next day!

Ingredients:

 • 1 pound dried split peas, rinsed and sorted
 • 1 medium onion, chopped
 • 2 carrots, diced
 • 2 celery stalks, diced
 • 3 cloves garlic, minced
 • 1 ham bone or 1½ cups diced ham (optional, for flavor)
 • 6 cups vegetable or chicken broth
 • 2 cups water
 • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
 • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
 • ½ teaspoon black pepper
 • 1 bay leaf
 • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional, for depth of flavor)

Directions:

1. Add the split peas, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, ham (if using), broth, water, thyme, salt, pepper, bay leaf, and smoked paprika to the crockpot.

2. Cook on low for 8-10 hours or cook for 4-6 hours on high setting. Stir occasionally if possible, but it’s okay if you let it cook untouched.

3.  For a smoother texture, use an immersion blender to partially blend the soup while still leaving some chunks. If you like it chunky, just give it a good stir.

Serve & Enjoy. Remove the bay leaf and ham bone (if used). Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve warm with crusty bread or crackers.

Tips:

• Vegetarian/Vegan Option: Omit the ham and use vegetable broth
• Thicker Soup: Reduce the water slightly or let it cook uncovered for the last hour.
• More Protein: Stir in diced cooked chicken or crispy bacon before serving.
• Storage: Refrigerate leftovers for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
