Sourdough Tortillas - A Bountiful Love

Sourdough Tortillas

I make sourdough tortillas several times a month. It is easy to make and an excellent way to use up your sourdough discard. However, sometimes, I also use sourdough discard that was just fed. It is totally up to you. No matter how you do it, this is a delicious and tasty tortilla recipe.  You can use this recipe for a Mexican theme night (burrito or taco nights) or make it to pair with another tasty recipe like my Instant Pot Chicken Chili

If you are planning on a Mexican theme dinner, pair this sourdough tortilla with a sure-fire crowd-pleaser Instant Pot Ranch Style Beans. Sometimes, I also love to use this recipe for breakfast. I serve it with scrambled eggs, topped with slices of avocados. This recipe s not only great tasting and frugal to make but easier on our guts!  At the bottom of this post, I will share a few easy recipes to make with sourdough discard.

1 cup sourdough starter. Here's how to make your own Sourdough Starter.
3 1/2 cups flour (options: all-purpose, whole wheat).
3/4 filtered water
1/4 cup oil (options: olive oil, coconut oil)
1 tsp salt

Using your mixer with the dough hook attachment, mix the starter, flour, water, salt, and oil. Knead/ mix approximately 3 minutes until well incorporated (the sides of the bowl will be clean- free from the sticky dough).

Grease a glass bowl, place the dough in it, and let it sit for 12 to 24 hrs.

After 12/24 hrs, you will see that it has doubled in size.

Divide the dough into 12 balls. I always divide the dough into two parts first.

Then divide each part into six dough balls.

Preheat a skillet or a cast-iron skillet with oil. On a lightly floured surface, roll the individual balls into a thin layer. As thin as you can, being careful not to tear it.

Cook the tortillas into the preheated skillet. I usually look for little rising bubbles before I flip it (a minute or so).

I made this tortilla a little bit thicker because I wanted to serve it with lentil soup (Instant Pot Lentil Soup Recipe).

Simple ingredients yet so good and satisfying. I did mention that it is gut-friendly right?
