I attended a womens conference a few years back and it is the first time that I ever heard the term "deconstruction of faith". It was really interesting and eye opening. We all have hard, painful past. Some of us have probably not recovered yet. Most of us probably are still in the thick of hard times. While faith can indeed get us through tough times, I understand that pulling strength from it will be the farthest on your mind. I can tell you though that knowing the real God, intimately knowing His attributes is the key.
Churches can be tricky. Their doctrines matter. What they stand for matter. How they teach the word of God is extremely important. Hebrews 4:12 says:
" For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart".
The word of God will convict you but it will never condemn you. If you belong to a church that condemn you instead of preaching the grace and mercy of God. Walk away. BUT...a big BUT. You still need to walk away from a church that stirs away from the word of God and openly celebrate sin, There is a big difference between grace and unconditional celebration of sin.
Reading Can I Say That? by Brenna Blain is one of the books that will truly open your eyes about what is not being discussed and preached on the pulpit. Jesus never walked away from tough questions. In fact, He answered all of the "unsafe" questions from the Pharisees and Saducees, He knows their hearts. Nonetheless, He knows the word and the will of His Holy Father. That is why He was able to addressed questions. He preached with authority. Often times, people deconstruct their faith because of what is not being discussed in the church or what is not being preach.
"Can I say That"? by Brenna Blain may be a tough read especially if you have experienced (or still experiencing or living) life's difficult issues like: sexual abuse same-sex attraction, mental health issues, miscarriage, and yes spiritual abuse. When we have a distorted view of God's message, these issues become the very reason we depart from our faith. All of these are discussed head on by Brenna Blain. Having experienced a life altering abuse, she can tell you and help you how to navigate your way to true faith.
