Filipino Picadillo

Every now and again I do crave for some dishes that reminds me of home. Last Christmas season , we were blessed to be able to come home and visit family in Philippines. What an awesome vacation that was! Aside from yours truly devouring all the Filipino foods that I did missed eating , going back home reminded me how simple life is living in there.. to slow down and how valuable family time is. Nothing beats that feeling when you are surrounded by love.

Here's an easy and super budget friendly recipe that I cook for my family that never fails to remind me of my home. Just a few ingredients and it doesn't involve hard to find ingredients. We love having this Filipino Picadillo recipes over our rice!

2 tsp garlic, minced
1 1/2 cups , diced potatoes ( white potatoes)
1 1/2 cup , diced carrots
1 medium size, chopped onion
2 tbsp soy sauce
2 cups water
1/3 cup tomato sauce
salt and ground pepper

Heat olive oil in saucepan. Fry the diced potatoes and carrots until tender. Remove the fried vegetables  from the pan and set aside.

Using the same pan, saute garlic and onion then add the ground beef.

Pour the water and bring to a boil.

Add soy sauce and tomato sauce. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes.

Then add the diced carrots. Simmer for another 3 minutes then add the fried vegetables.

Cut the remaining edges ..

Excellent fine motor practice.

You just need craft paints ( color of your choice), paint brushes and potatoes..yes a potato!
Cut the taters in half and skillfully design it.
Brush paint on top of the designed taters and stamp away.
I saw this craft activity first from : Crafty Morning

So cute!

After painting, let it dry completely. I just drew faces on each finger painting artwork .
Ahh, their faces after I showed them how to make a bunny is just priceless.

And this? How cute are these chicks?

Pineapple Ham Skewers

Have you been invited to a potluck party or just in charge of the appetizer? You wanted something from home because it is economical and homemade is always awesome, right? However you don't have all the time to whip up something good and you just can not think of an appetizer that is very easy (aside from chips and salsa). Here's a recipe for you!

Ingredients :

1 - 2 lbs sliced ham
8 oz pineapple chunks ( reserve the juice)
2 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp brown sugar
1/8 tsp ground ginger

You'll need : toothpicks

Soak your toothpicks with water so they don't burn.

Drain pineapple chunks, reserving the juice.

Make your marinade by combining the soy sauce, ginger, brown sugar and reserved juice.

Cut or fold your ham ( your choice-- I did cut my ham in half and folded it. I used Farmer John) . Place your ham and pineapple on skewers. Marinate for 2 hrs. Save some marinade for basting.

Grill  until heated through or until the marinade caramelize. I used a grill pan and it turn out good as well.

There you go..I did say it's easy right?

The house smelled sooo good while I was grilling these small yummies!

Don't forget to pin and share!
