Why Reading Needs to be Regularly and Productively

As soon as children enter Pre-school, you will notice how much their teachers encourage reading. Reading to young kids is fundamental to early language skills and it promotes early literacy.  Reading promotes creativity and imagination (De-Vito, n.d.) The promotion and encouragement of reading in our homes are essential for when they progress in school. Likewise, regular shared reading and productively reading to our young children is as vital.

Regular shared reading, as well as the home support, is beneficial for young kids. Research such as the study conducted to show the relationship of parental involvement to children's mathematical performance and mathematics anxiety presented how the interaction and home support can reduce kid's math anxiety (Vukovic, 2013). The frequency and consistency of reading books to pre-school children and shared book reading had a "moderate-to-strong relationship with measures such as emergent literacy, children’s language growth, and reading achievement" (Levy, R.; Hall, M. & Preece, J., p. 125, 2018).

While several types of research support the benefits of reading, it is important to note that reading takes time to develop. We can not force our kids to learn how to read at a young age. We need to foster a love of reading and remember that reading is fun but also a journey.

How can we cultivate their love of reading? How can we regularly and productively read with our kids?

1. Cultivate by example.
The study by Levy et al., (2018) also states that older children are more motivated to read when they see their parents read. We can not teach and preach if they do not see a good example in us.

2. Availability of books
Over a period of time, you will start to notice what type of books and stories they will be interested in. There was a time when our youngest was into ballet. She loved reading anything ballet. There was a time when all she wanted to read was about sharks. Visit the library often or purchase used books on Amazon.

3. Reading routine and a reading area
We started with bedtime reading. It was a scared routine for us. It was my bonding time with them. Then we started reading kid-friendly devotionals. Trust me that as your kid grows up, they may move away from bedtime reading. BUT, you will find them reading at any time.

4. Read with your child
This is where productively read comes. Don't just read for the sake of reading. Engage with them. Our girls love when I change my voice to match the characters in the story. Ask them questions! Not only to check on their comprehension but to interact. You will be surprised at how your kids see different things and you will be mesmerized with their perspective.

5. Try to provide appropriate reading level books.
Scholastic's five finger rule is perfect. It provides a general idea on appropriate book level reading.

0-1 unknown words = book is too easy
2-3 unknown words = book is just right
4-5 unknown words = book is too difficult

Right track reading also provides a good stage of reading development.

One of the reasons why some parents fail to read to their young children is the lack of time. That is one of the things I love about this book. It is a collection of five-minute stories that reinforce morals and values. It is also a perfect on-the-go storytime for kids. This book is a collection of Veggie Tale's funny adventures that foster values such as being patient, being responsible, loving others, and doing their best. The illustrations are very colorful and engaging. Even though it is meant for five-minute, don't let that stop you from interacting with them. When time allows, the book is a great tool for conversation and a teachable moment. The age suggestion is for 3-6 years old. However, I think that 3 to 10 years old will enjoy the Very Veggies Five-Minute Stories.

About the book:

Age Range: 3 - 6 years
Grade Level: Preschool - 1
Series: VeggieTales
Hardcover: 176 pages
Publisher: WorthyKids/Ideals

The Spirit of God- Review and Giveaway

Explaining the Trinity to our children can be intimidating as it can be challenging for their young minds. If we are honest, we adults can not even adequately explain and understand the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Sometimes, we tend to "postpone" explanation because it is our nature to give our children a definitive answer. It is mind-blowing to explain that "God is one and God is three" (Moore, 2016). It will be better if we can focus on how humans can not fully understand God's ways but He is a powerful and mysterious Father.

The omnipotence and omnipresence of God are another arduous concept kids may not understand. Those two big words can be explained with how Almighty and Powerful God is and He is present..everywhere! The Spirit of God (Illustrated Bible) is a good start for explaining God's power and presence.

A copy of The Spirit of God (Illustrated Bible) was given to me for review. My opinions are all a 100% mine and were not compensated.

    About the Book:

The Spirit of God Illustrated Bible brings to life more than 40 Bible stories that help readers understand that God’s Spirit has been with us since the beginning of time and continues to be with us today. From the glory of creation through the powerful letters of Paul, God’s Spirit is living in his people. Old and New Testament stories such as Adam and Eve, Abraham, Joseph, the Baptism of Jesus, and Pentecost come alive with dramatic illustrations by Fernando Juarez and moving text by Doris Rikkers. With a cover that sparkles and shines with foil, this is a special storybook Bible that will appeal to both children and parents alike.

    Ages: 3 to 8 years
    Format: Hardcover, 312 pages
    Publisher: Zonderkidz

    About the Author:
Doris Rikkers is a freelance writer and editor who has written many bestselling children’s books and Bibles. Although she loves the ocean, she lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan, surrounded by her books, her flower gardens, and her family and friends.

    About the Illustrator:
Spanish artist Fernando Juarez illustrates children’s books and works as an art supervisor at the Madrid studio Ilion Animation. The company produces 3D feature films for children. Fernando has three kids himself, and if he has any time left after work and family, you might catch him playing guitar in a rock band.

The suggested age for the book is 3 to 8 years but I think older kids will benefit from this book too. The book is good for 3 to 12 years old. For younger kids, you may re-tell the stories in a manner that they will comprehend and to keep it short. We all know about Preschooler's attention span.

As I have mentioned above, this book is a great start to explain about God's omnipotence and omnipresence. How His Spirit is always with us and how His power and spirit had been with people a long time ago. The illustrations are unique and it depicts what the story is all about. It is not too confusing or overpowering. I also love how every story starts with a Bible passage. It is perfect for memory verse as well.

    My First Book of Prayers

"Train up a child in a way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it"
     -Proverbs 22:6

The verse above is one of my favorite children Bible verse. It is a good parenting reminder. I firmly believe that in raising kids, all the important work starts at home. It starts at a very young age. Research states that the first five years of a child is crucial in shaping their brain, growth, happiness, and future. The first five years can positively ( and negatively) impact a child's learning abilities as well as their social and emotional skills.

Reading, playing, and interaction (hmmm..put the phones down) are fundamental. Reading and playing foster their love of reading and skills such as fine motor skills. There is no perfect time to read to our young ones at home and there is no such thing as "it is too soon to introduce" the word of God and to talk to Him in prayers.

This beautifully illustrated board book comes with simple prayers that teach kids about gratefulness, trusting and pricing Him. As for me, there is no greater gift than teaching our little children the comfort and power of prayer. The book is suggested to be for 8 to 12 years old. But I think younger kids, toddlers, and even babies can learn from this book too! It is a perfect book before bedtime or just bonding time.

Ages: 8-12 (BUT, this is also perfect for younger kids in my opinion).
    Format: Board book

30 Vegan School Snacks and Lunch Recipes

As our family transitions into healthy eating, the school lunch or snacks is a challenge. It can be an overwhelming thought. I always have to remind myself that vegan or plant-based meals do not have to be complicated. When we overthink the meals (talking about myself here..), we get easily discouraged. The best advice I can give is to just try and do your best! Depending on your reason for adopting a vegan lifestyle, try not to get overwhelmed. If your reason is only to make better healthy choices, try to be flexible. Do not impose your belief or choices to other families and your own kid. Most especially if they had been exposed to different meals (other than vegan). It is not an overnight change.

You can start by serving a meatless meal once or twice a week. If you are not vegan and you stumble upon this posts...don't leave yet! The collection below is delicious and nutritious! Give them a try!

The recipe collection/round-up is in a link-up style to make the viewing of all the images easy. If the images do not load up, feel free to open it as an external link (right click and choose open new tab).
